The latest vid from our friends at High Society, filmed by (the visually gifted) Jesse Winter Heading. The video is set to Esjay‘s “Dhekan Nu‘ from his latest mixtape The City Is Ours. The video is further proof that High Society nights are “THE” desi party in Vancouver. If you haven’t been, the event takes place on the last Thursday of every month at Ginger 62 and features Vancouver’s best emerging and established desi dj’s including DJ Reminisce, DJ A-Slam, DJ Lajit and DJ Goddess. Jesse Winter Heading, unofficially, the official High Society photographer brings his visual talent and skillset to the parties by summing up every party with an always impressive picture summary of the party … this time he went film … and aren’t we glad he did.
After releasing his debut mixtape entitled “The Imagine Nation”, Vancouver based music producer Esjay is at it again with “The City Is Ours”. The ten track mixtape features artists ranging from Jazzy B and Kaka Bhaniawala to J.Cole and Aaliyah. According to Esjay the mixtape had no real blueprint or genre it was trying to fit into, rather, the idea was to create fun, progressive, uplifting music using his desi roots and his western upbringing. For the track entitled “Sona Lagda Ae”, Esjay recalls “my friend Inder showed me a Youtube video of a villager in India singing this great traditional punjabi song and was like you have to do something with this! … So I took the vocals and BOOM! … two months later we have the song … everything is possible when it comes to music!” Esjay continues “The mixtape shows people you don’t need a lot of money and resources to create an exciting mixtape even if it includes desi artists. Just be creative, work hard, build a strong team and most importantly have fun.” Download the Mixtape Here

Three god status music producers in the desi music scene. They have absolutely shattered boundaries for desi musicians in terms of mass recognition and musical mastery. When it comes to the status of G.O.A.T. music producer in Desi Urban Music, it might just come down to these three: BALLY SAGOO Sample of Work: Chura Liya from his legendary album “Bollywood Flashback” … The track that changed the game (and made Desi’s everywhere run out to buy new subs for the ridiculous bassline): RISHI RICH Sample of Work: Dance With You featuring Jay Sean and Juggy D. It features the legendary 2.9 crew with Rishi as the maestro. This song was a monster. PANJABI MC Sample of Work: Mirza feat. Surinder Shinda … The production is absolutely on point and the rapping on this song is one of the best performances by a rapper on a desi track (period) “It was late last summer, my blood coloured the sky When I heard you break your swear Punjab in my eye” “My destiny she speaks through her every freaky line, Her body movement is the way I survive When I am on the battle field, staying alive Staying alive my arches is that [...]

Last time on Vancouver Buzzin, we highlighted the artists involved in the Desi music revolution in Vancouver. This time, we introduce a young, Vancouver based, snowboarding obsessed, desi artist, Jimmy Sira. Jimmy’s visual style is unique and visually ground-breaking. Just like music, photography has an underground scene too, and the pictures below are an example of what the best has to offer. Jimmy has an equally impressive film portfolio. He spent much of 2011 improving his craft working with emerging Vancouver based artists including Quixotic & Esjay. Check out a few vids from Jimmy below to see the amazing visuals yourself: Blackcomb//Filmed by Jimmy Sira//Music: The City Is Ours – Esjay feat.
